In the Spring, Shipping will begin when it is safe for your purchase to make its way to your growing zone. I only ship Priority mail, and only Monday-Wednesday to avoid your new beauties being in a warehouse over a weekend. Everything shipped from Darcy's Dahlias will be healthy stock, with visible growth.
I carefully monitor national weather and make decisions on shipping conditions using this national weather conditions service. If weather between Darcy's Dahlias and the delivery address will be below the point of freezing in the subsequent 3 day period of a potential shipping date, it will be deemed unsafe to ship.
If a buyer insists on shipment outside of these outlined parameters, the right to a replacement is void.
At this time we do not combine shipping by request.
At Darcy's Dahlias, our goal is to grow gorgeous plants, that show all signs of good health.
If a plant/cultivar begins to show virus symptoms, they are removed. We do not take viruses lightly and take many steps to prevent further spread.
Virus management strategies include:
1. Regular Inspection, removal of symptomatic plants
2. Strict Sanitation of cutting tools and growing containers
3. Insect Control, preventive plants and spraying Schedule
4. Overhead watering
5. Proper disposal of infected plants
6. Purchase and propagation of virus-free cuttings
Viral infections in dahlias are widespread, with recent studies showing an 87% infection rate in U.S. samples. Common viruses affecting dahlias include Dahlia mosaic virus (DMV), Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), Impatiens necrotic spot virus (INSV), Tobacco streak virus (TSV), and Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). These are spread from plant to plant by humans (using contaminated cutting tools) and insects, particularly thrips and aphids.
Symptoms of viral infection often result in mosaic patterns, ring spots, and vein chlorosis on dahlia leaves. Infected plants can also be stunted, bloom later than normal, and produce reduced-size blooms. Some infected plants appear to be asymptomatic and grow vigorously despite infection. Many growers can identify virus infection with visual inspections; however, laboratory testing or at-home test kits are the only way to scientifically confirm an infection.
Completely eliminating viral infections in dahlias is challenging and we will always commit to doing our best. Unfortunately we can not 100% guarantee virus free plants. While the high prevalence of viruses may feel daunting, we all can take steps to prevent. Maybe someday we will have these things beat.
